(Alternate Title: The developer's reason for changing the TGS HUD)
(Note: This is something that I've always wanted to do for a while but couldn't due to time constraints.)
(Note#2: These reasons are not actually given out by the developers. These are just, in a sense, fan speculations.)
The TGS HUD has always been something fans wanted to have since the beginning of Dead Rising. (If you don't understand what the TGS HUD is look at this link: , there had to be a reason why the developers taught it was a good idea to change the beautifully crafted HUD that was present within the demo, right? Well, as for a lack of a better transition, I will just list off all the complaints I could find and try to explain these issues as a result.
1. You can't see the inventory.
Back in 2006, people didn't have dual-monitors or wide-screen TVs (as much as they did now). Rather, they had big, bulky TVs known as CRT Television (Link: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cathode_ray_tube).
Also, in 2006, as a result of having these rather small screen provided with even smaller text, there were complaints of people having difficulty reading the on-screen text. As a result, Capcom released a Do-It-Yourself (DIY) in order to made the text slightly more readable. (Link: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dead_Rising_(video_game)#Reception)
Now imagine that with the TGS HUD: You're playing your game with a tiny screen (which probably has a resolution of 640X240 or even less) and you can't even SEE YOUR DAMN INVENTORY! (A.K.A. you can't even see what items you're even carrying in the first place!) Even with the footage present (to us viewers with widescreen monitors and what not), it's still pretty hard to see what you actually have inside your inventory (even in 1080p!). (Now imagine what the complaints would be had the HUD actually stayed in it's original form.)
2. There is no way to disable it. (Based the footage provided.)
In the retail (and presumably Pre-E3) HUD, if you waited a certain amount of seconds, your HUD would disappear, allowing you to catch a glimpse into the graphics of the game.
In TGS, there doesn't seem to be a way to actually disable it. (Again, in most of the footage, the player (whoever he/she is) is walking and attacking. But even when the player is standing still, the HUD never seems to go away.)
As a result, after the initial reaction of wonder and amazement would have faded away, what we would have would have been a mix of these things: A HUD that you can't actually disable, A HUD that would be visually distracting from the actual game experience (due to the fact that the HUD is BLEEDING PULSE RED and SHINY), and A HUD that would just be too cumbersome and inconvenient (due to the fact that it cover the edges of the screen at ALL TIMES.).
(Now imagine this with your tiny screen above: You can't see your inventory, the HUD keeps blocking part of the gameplay for you to see (resulting in many MORE deaths and zombie bites), the same HUD would probably strain your eyes in less than a hour, the fact that the HUD can't been disabled so you could actually a good visual on the graphics.)
(Note#3: This being said, I, in no way shape or form, actually hate the TGS HUD. I'm just saying that if I were to choose from the TGS HUD and the RETAIL HUD, I would probably pick the RETAIL HUD.)
