There's a lot of discussion recently over the announced PC port of DR1. While that may sound like a good news at first, not everything is quiet as optimistic...
First off, let's face the fact we all know - DR1 is not a polished game from a technical perspective. A few examples: dreadful survivor AI, Otis's calls you can't skip, several graphical bugs (not that severe). There are also other decisions that made the game very hard to love at times - only one save slot being the best example. Now, all these could (and should, in my opinion) be fixed in the PC port. I was quite appalled to see how many people refuse proper fixes to be made, demanding that the game be in the same state as the X360 release before ten years, just with higher resolution and unlocked framerate. I'm going to list reasons why I'm against this stance:
1. Everyone would have the chance to get the DR1 experience gamers were meant to get in 2006. It might be a no-brainer that the things I mentioned earlier are bugs, not features. Every game studio wants their product to be as close to being bug-free as possible, so that players can focus on the game itself. Besides, it's no. 1 pet peeve of most reviewers. Someone countered this argument saying that they want the X360 gameplay - including all bugs - preserved and carried over to PC with no changes. That, however, isn't necessary, because we already have the X360 version, so everyone wishing to get the original experience can either buy it (don't forget that in Europe the Dead Rising Collection was released in 2014) or, to at least get a picture, watch a gameplay of it on YouTube or any other site. Which gets me to another point...
2. If these bugs are fixed, it will get better scores in reviews, meaning more people will buy it. This doesn't include only casual gamers, but hardcore ones and modders as well. That means more players will mod the game, possibly improving it even more. There's another counter-argument - players will create many silly mods without adding any value to the gameplay. That would certainly happen, but let's not forget meaningful mods would surely be made too. You can always filter those unnecessary mods out. Apart from that, it serves a higher purpose - it keeps the community active. More people would probably join this forum, sharing their excitement and ideas. Of course, you could oppose this with saying that also more spammers and other people not abiding by the rules would show up. Again, this isn't such a big deal - stipo is able to ban posts from guests without an account, or, if the worst comes to worst, demand that every visitor have an account here. Plus, there are quite a few mods who could make sure that the rules are complied with.
3. The price tag is too high and isn't justified if only superficial graphical changes are made. New AAA titles tend to cost around €60/$60, the current price on Steam is set to €20/$20. Again, keep in mind it's a ten-year-old game.
I may add another reasons should they come to mind.
Don't be afraid to speak your mind! An honest debate is exactly what I'm seeking.
