Let me preface this by saying I know exactly how tall an order I'm asking about. It's a lot. I watched Smash Bros. Brawl's modding scene grow from manually hex-editing to change textures that couldn't support alpha to a multi-purpose tool that can do everything from importing models to animating characters, and I know how long that took, for a more popular game with Project M as a big reason to stay invested. And while all that went down I quietly made stages using the tools.
But still, I have to ask if it might maybe ever happen. Character mods are only ever amusing for so long, map mods are where it's at. I know people keep asking to get Still Creek from Case Zero into DR2 and OtR, and that'd be my jam, one of my favorite maps in the series, but I'm talking about importing maps from anything. From other games, built from the ground up in 3ds Max, given the appropriate collisions, and then filled with zombies and items, PP stickers, places to make combo weapons.
Before you ask, nope, I've got nothing to contribute to developing modding tools. I've done a little in Unity but that's baby training wheels programming. But I am an artist and if it's ever feasible I will totally spend hours and hours making custom maps instead of working on my own projects because I am mad. I've been working on Toad Town from Paper Mario to turn into a Smash stage in the vein of the Delfino Plaza stage, so I mean, I'm gonna have a model of Toad Town done, for starters... I could make the interiors of all the buildings, put frying pans and knives in Tayce T's house, toys of all types inside the Shy Guys' hideout, whatever you'd expect where you'd expect it.
I might be the only one, though. Almost nobody modding Brawl ever seemed interested in making stages from scratch like me. Loads imported from other games, though. You wanna Dead Rising in Clock Town, or Rapture, or Lordran?
But yeah back to the original question. Is a tool for boneheads like me to make functioning map mods close to the realms of reality
