Hi everyone,
What a damn fine game. Anything testosterone-packed that involves zombies and destroying things is a winner in my books. I just discovered this game at one of my friend's places and want to grab myself a copy for the PC.
Then I remembered about modding games- I had been employed at one time by a company producing video games for X-BOX in 2001 - 2003 so I have an understanding of what is required for development.
I am a software developer so I know my around code files. In addition, I am also a graphic artist so I know my way around CS4 and freehand art.
OK so what I need to know first is this: I have downloaded the tools from this site. I'll be purchasing my copy of the game (I'd prefer it legit...) and I see the DVD version is available.
Now I've read a bit in here about modding certain files to apply new skins, settings, etc. If I buy the DVD version does the game run completely off the DVD or does it put the system files on my computer and run the additionals off the DVD when playing (eg will the directory be on my drive for me to patch).
When modding skins for example, I'm getting the understanding that it's necessary to replace existing skins with the new creations to plug them in... is this correct?
Thanks again for any advice.... Cheers

hello there and welcome to Dead Rising 2...
now to business.
The game runs off of files on your computer, you don't need your DVD. So you can get a retail copy and still use all the mods.
as for textures, right now you have to replace what is already in the game. Although that is just right now.... I'm actually starting to think it's possible to add clothing to the game, I'm currently working on that and will release a tutorial if I figure it out. So keep a lookout!

Hi tommah,
Excellent, thanks for this advice! It's really helpful and now I can get started.
First up, I'd like to modify a skin to include a soccer uniform. So I guess I'll pick an existing one that's similar and try to adjust it.
Thanks for your help-

tom is probably the most prolific and successful modder we have ever had, his tom mods are incredible, and can give you an idea of what is possible. The direct skins tutorial will help you get started. Nice to see you, I have a feeling that a new wave of modders is about to start here, which is exciting for our community. Hopefully you are the guy who can help us with making Chuck lose health, the key to making the infinity mode project a reality. An editor called Kant made a program which worked to deduct life for him, but no one could replicate it. Eventually, maybe you can pick up were he left of?

Anno thanks so much for this info. Game is on order- should arrive in about 1 week. Been reading about some issues tho- I'm running Win7 64-bit and I see that the Gibbed Tools have problems ("Stopped working") at times. Guess I'll have to plod through this and see if I can get a workaround. Has anything been found yet? Also have a pretty aggressive antivirus (Panda)... will have to see how I can bend this too if I see any issues. Am running VS2010, so this is good. Can import textures into CS4 so this is good too. Will have to play the game a few times to see how it works- but after that... We be modding Getting impatient for the game to arrive now....

Hello again, I also have Windows 7 64-bit and I haven't had any problems with Gibbed.Tools... recently I've been hearing that people have been having those problems so I decided to upload the same Tools I used HERE... After they tried the ones I used it seems to work... don't know about your antivirus though, can't imagine it would be too hard to add exceptions.

Game is on order- should arrive in about 1 week. one week? what country are you in. That seems an extremely long time to wait. Tom, as always wrote a definitive response to your question, so there is nothing more I can add.

Update: Got my game (ordered Amazon, $19 great deal!!) Installed.... Tried an existing mod (invincibility), worked like a charm ;D Got into the Gibbed tools, watched tutorials, read docs, and started on modifying an existing texture. All this reference was very helpful in fastracking me to Modville... THANKS! I see there is a color map, a bump map and an alpha map. I forget how to modify alpha maps and create bump maps but I will look it up (long time since I did this)... Now here's my question, regarding the instructions here: 7th: Open the dds files in Photoshop and modify,
8th. Before you save the modified photoshop dds. Open Woody's Texture Viewer (WTV.EXE) and see if the original dds you are modifying is DX5 or DX1 and save it with the same settings
After saving the modified dds file, check the .dds filesize to see if it is the same and do that for every dds you skin because others are DX1 and others DX5)
What is DX1 or DX5... is that a DirectX thing? How do I find out for the open textures and save it accordingly? Is this done in PhotoShop (I am using CS4) or saved in WTV.EXE? Also, when I originally open the color maps are they 8-bit, 16-bit or 32-bit? How do I find this out (I tried opening the Arthur shorts in all three modes just to look at the map and I noticed better color depth on 32-bit of course.) Thanks again, small steps lead to big ones as I figure this out.

Per instructions: Before you save the modified photoshop dds. Open Woody's Texture Viewer (WTV.EXE) and see if the original dds you are modifying is DX5 or DX1 and save it with the same settings As you have the texture open, at the bottom of Woody's Texture Viewer (WTV.EXE) in the left bottom it will say DX1 or DX5. I don't know what DX1 or DX5 is, I only know where it is. I don't know anything about color maps I will rewrite the instructions right now. deadrising2mods.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=dr2tuts&action=display&thread=213
