Hi everybody. I discover this forum today and i must say it is very awesome. It's a pleasure too see so many people working on Dead Rising 2's mods. So I thought that I can give a try with a request. I finish DR2 with Final S with a Radeon Mobility. In some areas the Game go really slow and the option that you can modify are very low, so my question is: there is a way to "eliminate" some graphical effects to improve the game? Maybe a tweak. For example my walk on Fortune Plaza or Platinum Strip are really painful. Thanks for reading . PS. My english is not perfect, i'm italian. Key words: Lag, slow, less zombies, lagging Category name Game performance

Yes, here the same, plaza and strip, the outdoors areas are most crowded with zombies and the fps are going down anywhere. Lower resolution and low zombie and shadow details help a lot. But if there would be an option to disable shadows completely, this would be even more helpful. Perhaps someone has an idea.

I don't think lower zombie is a big idea. For Example in the underground there are many zombies but the FPS are not going down. I think the cause is the light reflection in the strip for example.

While I don't kow how to reduce the number of zombies, there are a few things you can do to help speed up your game.(if you haven't already done this that is) 1. Free up ram and CPU usage: This is usually the biggest problem when it comes to gaming. There are too many processes running and your game cannot get enough Ram and CPU attention. You can give more cpu attention to the game by shutting down programs like messenger, Itunes, any anti virus or Internet security(don't shut down your anti virus/internet security if you are playing online or constantly connected to the internet) You can shut down even more process by opening up task manager and shutting down unneeded processes. (google the processes you are unfamilar with before you shut them down) Alternatively If you are running Windows XP you can bring up the command prompt and type in services.msc to open up Services. If you are unfamilar with doing this you can download the TweakHound_XP_Services_SP3.zip here www.tweakhound.com/xp/xptweaks/supertweaks6.htmand follow th guide on how to disable services. Word of warning though, if you mess up and shut down the wrong process while using the task manager method you can just restart your machine to bring back any service you accidently shut down. However if you use the Services method you can mess up your machine bad so Use at own risk
2. Make sure that your video card and sound card drivers are up to date. Not only can this help speed up your machine but can stop some crash to desktops and the like. There are more ways you can speed up your machine then the ones I listed here. A little time with google can give you alot of information on this. And Sorry Windows 7 Users. I can't seem to find any guidesor the like on how to stop services on Windows 7

I don't think lower zombie is a big idea. For Example in the underground there are many zombies but the FPS are not going down. I think the cause is the light reflection in the strip for example. I get +15% fps in the outdoor areas with the change from medium to low zombie details (1360x768, 2xMS, 2xAF, blur off, low shadow). Blur off is +25% fps. You can test it with Fraps. It seems low shadows and high shadows dont make any difference, strange. There must be a way to get rid of the shadows. Even with low shadows every zombie has a detailed shadow, but who cares about zombie shadows. They cost a lot of fps, I guess.

Should I trash my Laptop only because i can't play at one videogame at his full potential? No thanks, I prefer uninstall the game and nothing more. I'm not a baby that cry if I can't play a game. I want to thanks neoweiner for the help. You can close this topic about my "freaking lag!@!!!!!".

Great advice, especially from neoweiner. So many GREAT editors no longer edit here! Here is a post about decreasing the number of zombies. and also changing debug mode. How did you all get FPS, internally, or from an external program? From another locked thread " remove shadow": Posted by shaun71 on Dec 18, 2010, 3:46pm
:-/ok hi guys awile back stated a thread called laaaag and i was wonding how to remove shodows compleetely do u guys know how ? any other tips to reduce lag i would apretate my settings are all the down on the games im out of optins
Posted by omeganuepsilon on Dec 18, 2010, 3:55pm REduce resolution I play on minimum currently and it still looks pretty good. Used to be terrible back in the day, now it's just more of a matter of how insanely crisp it can get. I'm actually impressed how well it looks on low res.
If that's not enough, you can reduce the number of zombies in missions.txt.
I can't be assed to actually tell you how to go about replacing that file(it's all over this forum), but I posted a modified one in WIP area with greatly reduced zombie amounts for most of the game(there's more towards the end, as I realized jsut last night when I finally finished).
Other than that, no known news on no shadows.
I toyed with the idea of editing the csv(Open office can open them, I imagine MS word can also) files in datafile.big, but am feeling ill today and again, can't be bothered with it. From another locked thread Custom resolutions possible?: Posted by omeganuepsilon on Dec 17, 2010, 12:45pm I was wondering if anyone has gotten the game to run at custom resolutions, of if they're hardwired into the engine?
I'm currently playing at 800x600(still looks pretty amazing, oddly enough, and it's the only way I can get it to play smoothly), but on a widescreen monitor, and have to change the TV settings so it doesn't stretch side to side.
Ideally I would like to run 960 x 600.
I tried changing the .ini over in My Documents/games etc. Didn't work, but did screw up my game some, didn't have to change TV settings to 4:3 before... From turn off shadow mod?Posted by ineedmorefpsindr2 on Oct 30, 2010, 9:59pmhow do you completely get rid of all shadows in dr2 if possible any one know?? Posted by notld on Nov 2, 2010, 7:43pmLook, there's an .ini file in the savegames folder, rendersettings.ini. Here's the content: // Render Settings RenderWidth = 1280 RenderHeight = 720 VSync = true Refresh = 60 MSAA = 0 Gamma = 1.1 COMBINED_BLUR = COMBINED_BLUR_DISABLED ZOMBIE_COUNTS = ZOMBIE_COUNTS_TWOFOLD SHADOW_QUALITY = SHADOW_QUALITY_LOW TEXTURE_FILTERING = TF_TRILINEAR
I tried changing the SHADOW_QUALITY = SHADOW_QUIALITY_LOW to SHADOW_QUALITY = 0, but it didn't change anything. Maybe anyone who knows a bit more about any of this could try it and tell what to change it for. Another locked thread: Remove Shadows?Posted by adejam on Oct 24, 2010, 5:17am Oh-Hi! I was wondering if anyone can make a mod to remove shadows in the game? I ask this because I don't think zombies are my problem; whenever I minimise out of DR2 and then maximise back in, all my lag is gone... for a short while that is... I was thinking maybe someone could help me? Best regards, Adejam. Posted by metal33tca on Oct 24, 2010, 5:35am When you maximize, as the game is faster for a while, are the shadows gone too? Posted by adejam on Oct 24, 2010, 6:34am No, but I assume removing shadows would help in the long run, rather than trying to find something about this mysterious minimise fix Posted by ubtri© on Oct 24, 2010, 1:27pm You guys just need to upgrade your PC's. That's BS, In oblivion and Fallout 3 you could remove even heads, and some guy redid all of the Oblivion textures. People could do all sorts of things, and even removing blur (Which wasn't an option in the PC version) was possible. The game wasn't even made for Windows 7, and was impossible to play normally, but was made possible by a simple edit of a file which made it so the game didn't crash after starting a new game. Posted by ubtri© on Oct 26, 2010, 5:14pmThere's a lot of PC games that can be modded to great extent, you listed two. Oblivion was ported to console, not vise versa like DR2. I'm familiar with Oblivion mods as I played with a lot of them, and as you mentioned someone redoing Oblivion textures, that's probably very possible in DR2 as people are already reskinning clothes and whatnot. But it's a VERY daunting and time-consuming task. DR2 hasn't been out very long, a month at best, and being a DIRECT CONSOLE PORT means modders have little to work with.
You know, a modder is just a person like you. Maybe you guys can come up with a "Remove Shadows" modification yourselves? If it's so easy to do... If not I suggest waiting for it to happen naturally, in the years to come of this great game being released Posted by adejam on Oct 27, 2010, 5:48pm I always use gamebooster, But meh, I'm not so picky about FPS now, my whole OS went kaboom and my pc didn't even realise it had an OS ¬_¬ Im working on my pc nows D: Posted by avenkross on Oct 29, 2010, 4:56pmActually.. I just got off my butt and decided to look into it. in the shaders folder there were a few BIG files I opened them up and looked at them. deadrising-ss.big had two files. one was.. well.. I don't know what it was, but the other seems to be what runs the show.
not sure if I should post it here, put I found this.
FORCE_INCLUDE_SHADOW_TEXTURE ENABLE_POINT_LIGHT_0 ENABLE_KEY_LIGHT ENABLE_ATTENUATED_SHADOW INTERNAL_ENABLE_SHADOW There were a few other lines but I don't think that has anything to do with it. This thing has weird symbols. Created a back up of deadrising-ss.big and messed around with it, noticing that some of these had _0s and _1s at the end. didn't work. of course, like I said I was just screwing around. I'm assuming you're a modder or you do something here (Look for mods) I don't know. what do you think I should do? should I take this elsewhere or what? Posted by Wizard on Nov 1, 2010, 2:55pmGamebooster huh? Interesting. I should try that on a few games, see if it even works.
About the topic, and shadows I believe it is possible to COMPLETELY disable Shadows in-game, by editing the stages .CSV files and turning all the shadows to 0.
Usually disabling shadows in a game will greatly increase FPS, but I suppose it also depends on the game's graphical engine. Posted by anno1404 on Dec 31, 2010, 11:20pm I am sure one of these options may solve this problem. Instructions atop the page. Mod:Debug_Mode#Options_available

Just today I found out a way that might help some people.
For quite some time, Nvidia provides the Nvidia System Settings with its drivers. And until today, I never really used it, because there was no need. But since GTA4 looks butt-ugly on high settings, I was fiddling around with them a little.
Under 3D Settings you can adjust a few things. Most important for me were the settings of Antialiasing Mode, Texture Filtering and Maximum Number of pre-rendered images.
The AA seems to be much smoother and requiring less performance when done by Nvidia. I use the setting of Expanding the game's settings, not overriding them. And when an AA of x8 would normally cause significant drop in framerates, it's even smoother now.
The Texture Filtering can be assisted by an optimizing option (don't know the exact name in English as my manager is in German). Using that will smoothen framerates, too.
And most importantly the pre-rendered images (though probably only recommended on a multicore CPU). Using the maximum number (8, for me), all games run MUCH better. I guess having a Quad Core pays out, as only so few games use more than 2 cores, so there's performance left.
That's what boosted performance (and even increasing the looks) for all games significantly for me. So I suggest, if you can, play around with it and maybe your DR2 will run better, too. According to Fraps, mine is running at 60FPS all the time, so I can't make out any differences there.

What effects performance -
Hardware ----------- If your absolutely certain your hardware is fine, skip to additional notes. I hope this knowledge on hardware, helps those who need it.
- CPU. Make sure it's a mid end or high end chip. Do research on your CPU. This, is something a lot of people take for granted. Thinking, only speed matters. No! The quality of the chip and memory cache matters too! Low end chips, are going to slow you down no matter how fast they are or how many cores they have!
- Video Card (GPU, memory cache). Most people own crappy versions of the latest video cards, simply because it came with their computer or they don't know much about video cards. No big deal. Plan for an upgrade, by educating yourself on what model of ATI or Nvidia card is built best for gaming. Find out if it's compatible with your OS and motherboard, plug it in. Update the drivers. Then your golden.
- Motherboard bus (if your board is archaic, yet has a duo core - time to update dude), I can list more details if your bored enough
- RAM.
- Free resources through task manager closing programs you don't need running in the background. Doing this on Windows 7 is as easy as XP. ctrl+alt+delete (toggle your way to task manager). Unplug external devices (USB) you don't need.
Additional Notes (if you can work with debug mode & mod code via txt files) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- - Reduce items - Reduce zombies (there's an existing mod for that)
It's more then just lighting, shadows, and graphics effecting performance. The biggest culprit of all, is zombies and items together. This, is where your resources are eaten away in the larger areas most. Find out what your comfortable sacrificing, and remove it.
I'm still doing this myself on and off. But, I can tell you my game became faster most of the time in areas. Which is to say, pieces of a larger area still lag on rare occasion because I need to remove items in those areas. So, it's up to you on how much time you want to spend modding to suite your speed needs.
It maybe more practical to test a better video card.

I turned down the dismember- (and bloodeffects) probabilities for the weapons in the datafile.big.
example: cFirearmItem Shotgun ("headshot only, almost") ProbabilityOfExploding0 = "0.99" // .3 ProbabilityOfExploding1 = "0.3" // .3 ProbabilityOfExploding2 = "0.1" // .3 ProbabilityOfExploding3 = "0.1" // .3 ProbabilityOfExploding4 = "0.1" // .3
This helped me a lot. Before this, the massive dismember- and bloodeffects was killing my framerate. Now its much better.

Numerous ways I have found to speed up the game dramatically: Remove all walls, ceiling and floorsThis link: dl.dropbox.com/u/29307184/no_enviroments.zip Has the following empty areas: Americana Casino Arena Backstage Atlantica Casino Food Barn Palisades Mall Royal Flush South Plaza Yucatan Casino This folder has the following file: fortune exterior empty The removal of all walls, floors, and ceilings massively speeds up game. Note: in the lighter areas, removing all of the environment can cause the area to be very washed out. First backup and then replace these downloaded files in data\models\environment\americana_casino
and
data\models\environment\royal_flush
etc. For examples and instructions how to modify your own files see: Mod:Enviroment[/blockquote] Arena stadium
Replace files from:
data\models\environment\arena_stadium
www.mediafire.com/?vyowos4o6jsb9js
No bleachers (different mod for items):
NO ZOMBIESTo further speed up the game, see also the posting and attached missions.txt file which has:
No survivors, No zombies, No psychopaths No missions, No cases. Extermination Mode ( All zombies will die )From verm on dead-rising.wikia.com : Dead Rising 2 v1.0 + 21 Trainer found here: m0006.gamecopyworld.com/games/pc_dead_rising_2.shtml
turn it on , use the option Extermination Mode ( All zombies will die )
But their bodies are still there and you have to wait until their disappear. Decreasing Zombies mod Thanks to omeganuepsilon:
Decreasing Zombies - Mod created Debug ModeRemoves all zombies:
The debug mode removes all zombies:
High rollers option on main debug screen - removes all inside zombies.
X_FORTUNE EXTERIOR under levels - removes all outside zombies. ZombiefactoryFrom a stupid forum which does not allow you to read unless you register (I saw it on Google cache) (modified and clarified) All of these changes are in the missions.txt file linked to above:
Question:
Which file would I change the zombie spawn rates?
Answer:
In the datafile.big folder.
There is a missions.txt file.
In this missions.txt file is several entries for every day for each zome called zombiefactory.
There are indicators called amount0, amount1, etc up to 5, though not every zone has up to 5.You can change all these numbers outright and even adjust the density around the spawn point. In my mod I used a script to increase all these values by 50% of the original. Doing it by hand will take forever unless you do a bulk replace to make them absurd. (the missions.txt file is 1668 Microsoft Word pages, there are 2,963 amount entries)Keep in mind, past a certain level the zombies clusterfuck and you will find yourself clipping through the zombies and other weird occurrences. I found 50% more is about limit and even then on the later days I get weird occurrences. UpdateI modified the missions.txt in datafile.big. I changed ALL of the amount entries to 0 so for example:
amount1 = "5"
became
amount0 = "0"
Interesting result:
Missions
There are no missions at all.
I pull up my watch and map and there are no missions.
Start time
I used the debugger mode to start at the Lost mission, and instead of starting during the day, I started early in the morning. I checked my watch and it was 4:52 am. So I started at 4:00 am.
Performance
My computer was even slower than before, I could actually see the water slowly going down the fortune park grotto.
Number of zombies
The number of zombies was less, but not completely gone. There were only 5 zombies in Royal Flush Plaza near the door to Fortune Park. There were many more in Fortune Park, but still less. [/spoiler] removing items also works very well to increaseAccording to Spider, removing items also works very well to increase speed. Attached below is an empty americana casino with only the spawn points where chuck spawns. Unpack data/datafile.big with gibbed's
Backup americana casino.txt
Place this downloaded americana casino.txt file is data/datafile.big
Repack datafile.big with gibbed's
Rename the repacked file to datafile.big
Start the game. Attachments:

Spider's Boost ModTo be fair, the item removal trick only works if you at least meet the game's minimum requirements. Specifically: - CPU 2.2 Duo Core (Athlon) or 2.4 Duo Intel core. If they're at least mid end chips. - A quality video card. Low end is okay, for this trick, it's a removable video card from a company like Radeon or Nvidia. Built in video cards, will hamper performance regardless of how awesome the CPU is. - RAM, at least 2GB. My specs: - 2.2 Duo Core Athlon - A 4200HD Radeon - 4 GB RAM If you meet minimum requirements, you can feel a boost by strategically removing items. Clusters of items, tend to cause lagging. But, if the items are spread out, the game is more forgiving on resources. Happy hunting.

Oh ok. it's actually really simple if your computer has the option to do that, but not all computers have the option. I'm guessing it's mostly gaming laptops because of the 2 options, and it's easy to not realize since games usually run on nvidia by default. What i suggest putting in is: If you have a gaming laptop with nvidia card, but which also has integrated graphics, make sure you run the game with your nvidia card. To check this, right click on the game exe, and there should be an option to choose between the 2. If integrated is default, that is your reason for low framerate. You can set your nvidia card as default. Because some computers only have 1 option, the selection would not make sense and therefore doesn't exist. I've only tested this on a nvidia-card gaming laptop and it works. (This is my understanding, i'm not a professional at this kind of stuff) Also as an additional performance tip, you can allow the game to use more memory in task management, and for some games there's even special launchers that allow for a big memory use.
