Hey there everyone!
When I first saw that Dead Rising 2 has Co-op (that was one and half a year ago), I immediately thought we need to play with it via LAN. Sadly when the game was released last year, it didn't have it. Then time passed by, and another version came out not so long ago, called Dead Rising 2 - Off The Record. I was happy, thinking they might be added LAN for it, but no luck...
Everywhere I go on forums, websites...etc, people are asking if there is LAN available in this game. It just makes me sad thinking that the engine the game is built upon supports LAN, they just didn't put it in there... or they did? Reading through the Debug options, I've seen tons of multiplayer related options. I can't try them out myself, so I need some volunteers for this project.
WHAT'S THIS PROJECT IS ABOUT:
To create a method to play the game via LAN, without any online stuff (at least 2 player Co-op should work)
TO DO LIST:
-Disable GFWL
-Host a game
-Other player sees the game
-Other player can join
-Players can play without any problems
DONE SO FAR:
Nothing, project just started
A little more detail on this whole project:
1. Why do we need to disable GFWL:
When we want to play a game via LAN, we don't need any online features. That means if I were to connect my PC to my bro's PC, or my friend's PC, then there's no Internet connection. Therefore when I choose the JOIN CO-OP option in the menu, it should forward me to that menu, and not displaying the "You need a LIVE profile for this" message. So first we need to disable this. I tried doing this by editing some debug settings, but I didn't get much further...
2. Hosting a game:
If we disable GFWL, we still need to host it. That means we host a game, and let the other player know we're here, that he can join the game. We should use the commands that use the system_link settings, and change that we are hosting the game, and what our external IP is.
3. How the other player sees us:
The other player should see that there's a server, because he puts almost the exact same settings in his user.ini or master.ini.
4. Joining is harder:
Even if he sees the server, he may not be able to join. We need further testing, maybe bandwidth throttling, or just disabling the 30 ms ping limit (we know some dude who can do this easily once we do all of the above things)
5. Playing the game:
If we can host offline, the second player can see us, join us, and he appears in the game, then we need to test the game. What if it doesn't work? What if it disconnects when we change levels?
Other things need to be done/tested:
If there are people who want to help us with the project, and bought the game/have a valid LIVE profile to play online, then maybe they should test the game with the debug features.
There are settings that enable logging of online events, and they should test them out, see what stuff the game logs (IP Addresses, ping, or anything we could think of)
That's about it. This is more like a brainstorming from me, as I don't have 2 superb computers (just one) that can play Dead Rising 2, and I can only use the better PC in the mornings, as my bro uses it mostly.
I don't think anyone has tried this before, maybe because they didn't have time, didn't care, or are simply afraid of the consequences this might bring. I just want to do this project, and I'm looking for some very helpful, creative and talented people to do this.
...so guys, what do you say? Wanna help me with this?
