 Performance Mod 2 -Beta-
« Thread Started on Jul 27, 2011, 2:42am »

The very first semi-functioning version is now available to download.

It's a large download (about 156 megs, LOLOLOLOLOLOL) so hold on to yer butts.

Changes:

-Pre-rendered a few cutscenes that are noticable from New Game Plus and regular New Game

There are many more cutscenes to come, I'm expecting the finished product to be over 1 GB.

Demonstration:

Next update:

Reduce Zombies and load times, pre render more cutscenes

Not to rain on your parade but I feel I should tell you before you put too much effort in the wrong direction. Large files are not very popular among people unless you are doing a major revamp and the mod looks nothing like the original game or adds a lot of new content.

Tommah has mentioned item's LoadDistance = "*" property which may eliminate the need to delete items and would have comparable effects to the pre-rendered scenes.

I've mentioned removing emitters which cause fog, dirt, dust, water, etc... effects that in itself takes a good chunk to render so removing them isn't the most visually appealing but gives results.

Zombies: One thing I noticed recently is special zombies like looters and mercs contain more detail than regular zombies. While with regular zombies you can spawn more than 100 in an area and performance not be affected with the special zombies you can spawn very little before it affects performance to a crash. So while reducing zombies might have a slight affect it really won't be much.

Anyways it is not a bad idea what you are doing but there wont be many people who will download large mod files that will only work during cinematics. By tackling the other issues you cover over all game-play including the cinematics.

Could you at least show a little more respect to my idea, please?

It takes almost an entire damn hour to pre-render one 40 second cutscene...

To my knowledge I was not being disrespectful towards you or your mod. I was only stating facts about less time consuming approaches that would result in the same overall effect. Hell the good thing about your idea is you can wear a different outfit for each cut scene and render them that way which would cause a good laugh to any player with a sense of humor.

The thing I was trying to get you to see is that you may have flawless cut scenes but the choppy gameplay would still be there. A higher portion of players plays for gameplay than for cinematics. If you insist on going down the cinematic route I am not sure how well compressed .bik format is vs other formats. You may want to figure out if it is the best compressed format video format out there. If not you may want to try to compress it to a new format and try having the game play it so your mod wont be too big as that will put off most players.

If you still find any of my post offensive then I don't know what to tell you as I am only offering advice.

This is a great thing your trying to do maddacheeb, but Ubiquit has a really good point. I think you should take his advice ;)

Bik is the only media format supported by DR2.

And I'm in a rather bad mood today, so forgive me.

Considering you ranted about quite a lot mods here without any respect at all, which led to some discussions, you could take some constructive criticism, which was elegantly given, being moody or not. ;)

On topic: I like the idea of pre-rendered cutscenes and I suppose it would help quite a bit on weaker machines. And while I partly agree with ubi, I think in times of 10+MB/s downstreams, the size of mods shouldn't matter too much, if you have the online storage and the installation is easy.
But then again, people with weak computers may also be people who don't pay for big-ass downstream and therefore would neglect a mod of 750+MB. Neither needs my machine a performance boost mod, nor does my connection not allow me to download fast.
But then, it does appeal more to people the smaller the mod is. So maybe adding ubi's suggestions into it or just making a second "lite" mod with them might really shine, because the other boost mod we have changes some game elements and some people might not like that, so this would be a viable option. :)
